Fuerteventura 2018 Day 5

Fuerteventura 2018

Day 5

Day 5 was an exciting day. Our alarms were set for 5:45am and we were up and out of the apartment by 6:30am.

We cycled out in the dark on a tight schedule into the Corralejo Sand Dunes, around a 20-25 minute bike ride away from the apartment. There were virtually no cars on the road! This was a relief as it felt reasonably dangerous cycling on the hard shoulder of an unlit foreign road in the dark on a fairly unfamiliar bike...

We arrived at Playa Del Moro around 15 minutes before the scheduled sunrise. The only other human life was a lone surfer in his camper van.

We chained our bikes up on a road sign next to the road and headed down towards the sea. We found a spot on the beach where a small rock barrier had been built. We set up all the camera gear (tripods etc.) and took some photos of the beach and sea with the beautiful sunrise colouring and a time lapse of the sun rising.

After we had taken generic sunrise shots and the sun had fully risen, we took the opportunity to do a photoshoot. This photoshoot are in a separate blog post!

Elated, we headed back up the beach to our bikes.

We took a slow ride back to the apartment on the now much safer roads in the early morning sun. We made it back in time for Alex's usual morning alarm to go off. This made us feel amazing as we'd managed to do such a lovely thing before we would have usually woken up!

We had breakfast, changed into our swimwear and walked over to the Acua Water Park, around a 15 minute walk from the apartment. You couldn't miss the entrance with the humungous fibreglass superhero statue outside! Tickets were fairly expensive at 64 for two, with lunch vouchers. However, it turned out to be completely worth the money as we ended up spending the whole day here and there was so much to do!

I was able to show off my flaky Spanish skills and ask for a locker (Una taquilla por favor). The cashier was suitably impressed and spoke back to me in Spanish. Much to my surprise, I understood more of what he said than I thought I would... not so flaky after all!! Once we had hired our locker and put our stuff away (including my camera hence the lack of photos from inside the park as I was paranoid that it would get wet or damaged) we found a couple of sunbeds to put our towels, sunglasses and flip-flops on and then went down to the lazy river! We opted for a double rubber ring. There was little to no current unfortunately so the attraction was suitably dubbed the Bloody-Hard-Work-River by us for the rest of the day! It took around 10 minutes to get around the river. Next we decided to work our way through the big slides. We started with a simple race slide which was fun  and then moved on to a pair of very steep, very fast, chute slides. These were a complete whiteout at speeds of around 30mph (48kph). The water was cold but refreshing in the hot sun. Next we went on a couple of helix slides and then went onto a slide called the Dark Cave. This was an enclosed tunnel slide with rubber rings. Its black and dark-red exterior acted as a massive heat insulator and once inside the slide, it was pleasantly warm. It's a fast slide with sudden unexpected turns due to not being able to see anything.

We went back to our sunbeds to dry off and relax for a while before going over to the building where lunch was. The menu was quite predictable: burgers, hotdogs etc. We decided on a burger and chips each. The chips were amazing though the burger was fairly average and cold...

We went back to the lazy river to let our food go down! Infact, we spent the majority of the rest of our time in the water park on the lazy river, topping up the tan (unknowingly burning in my case) and relaxing. In total we probable spent the best part of 2 hours on the lazy river.

At around 4:30pm we walked back to our apartment. We then went straight back our on our bikes to return them. On the way back we stopped by the supermarket to pick up a lilo and ball to use in the pool over the next couple of days, as well as a few foodie things like tea and pastries.

Dinner destination for Day 5 was Toro Beach. We couldn't resist trying out their main menu seeing as we'd been there for tapas and drinks already.

Steak and Sangria it was!

Absolutely delicious cut of meat, cooked to perfection and presented beautifully.

The restaurant was quiet and reasonably priced. The fact that it was so quiet confused us as the setting and restaurant is beautiful. Our only thoughts as to why this might be are because it isn't very central, being a 10 minute walk from the main restaurant area of Corralejo and that British tourists probably don't find 'fine dining' appealing on holiday, especially if they have kids with them. We weren't complaining though, after a long tiring day of cycling and water park-ing, the quiet setting was perfect for us!

After dinner we walked back over to Reef Bar for coffee. By this point, we had been so many times that the member of staff recognised us and said "Hola! Two café con leche?".
