Fuerteventura 2018 Day 1

Fuerteventura 2018

Day 1

Waking up at 2:30am, an early 5:45am flight got us to Fuerteventura around 10am. The weather was a little overcast, as we were expecting, when we first arrived but it was still hot and the clouds soon dispersed. The first thing we noticed was how strong the wind was, around 37km/h. This turned out to be a god send when the heat became slightly unbearable!

We weren't able to get into our Airbnb until 4pm so decided to drop our bags off and have a wander along the beach and find somewhere to eat lunch. We came across a beach-side restaurant called Toro Beach where we had a few tapas dishes (garlic mushrooms, garlic prawns and chorizo) along with a beer and a stunning sea view!

We then decided to head further along the beach to the Reef Sports Bar which was set out with wooden pallet love-seats and tables facing out onto an almost undisturbed view of the turquoise blue sea and the Isla de Lobos. Here we had a quick coffee before it was time for us to check in to our Airbnb apartment.

The apartment was beautiful, with a bright and airy white, blue and grey colour scheme. It had a good sized kitchen with induction hob, full sized fridge-freezer and a nice surprise of a washing machine (we used it numerous times over the week to rinse swimwear and wash our beach towels and underwear!). The living space was bigger than expected with plenty of room around a 4-person sofa, coffee table and TV. The living area led out onto a large terrace with a dining table. There was no view as such from the terrace. However, being on the ground floor, it was a secluded area looking out onto flowering shrubs and palm trees, blocked from view of the road by a pretty hedge with pink flowers.

(A couple of the resident stray cats in the hotel complex became very friendly with us over the course of our holiday. We named this one Milo)

After settling into the apartment, we decided to head to the supermarket to stock up on a few essentials. The apartment was about a 5 minute walk to a large supermarket which is located in the El Campanario Centro Comercial. The shopping centre was literally right next to the hotel complex in which the Airbnb was located. Couldn't be more convenient!

Next, it was time to head down to the pool and enjoy the last couple of hours of intense sunshine of the day. The pool area was lovely with 3 separate pools to choose from (2 large pools with 1 shallow kids pool). We chose our sunbeds, there were plenty of spares to choose from, and soaked up the sun for a while before jumping in the pool to cool off. The pools weren't heated so I suspect they may be uncomfortable to use in the winter months but it was refreshing in the summer weather!

In true Katie and Alex holiday style, our task for the first evening of our holiday was to find a Chinese restaurant because let's face it, who doesn't like a Chinese? We found a lovely restaurant called Asia Gardens where we had a traditional Chinese banquet for 2 (Spring Rolls, Aromatic Duck Pancakes, Chicken Curry, Beef in Black Bean Sauce and Egg Fried Rice). The food was amazing, so much so that I didn't actually get my camera out to take pictures of the food. The portion sizes were amazing too, infact probably too big as we didn't manage to finish the Chicken Curry or the Beef in Black Bean Sauce before we were full!

We took a stroll along the beach after dinner to get back to our apartment which was a nice way to end a very long day...
